Fabric Softener Sheets – New Uses

Put scented softner sheets in the vacuum cleaner bag.  It will scent your home as you clean and since it is electrostatic it also attracts the dust so use softener sheets for dusting furniture too. If you do sewing, run the needle through a softner sheet and it will go through your fabric easier.

Dents in carpeting from furniture

If you have recently moved furniture and now have dents in the carpet, gently fluff the flattened fibers with the edge of a coin or spoon. If that doesn't work, spray the fibers with a blow dryer set on low while continuing to fluff with the coin.

Freezer Cleaning Tip

After defrosting a chest-type freezer, use a cotton floor mop (a new, clean one) to swab the hard-to-reach bottom of the freezer. When all of the water has been mopped up, swab a final time with a solution of baking soda and water to keep the freezer smelling fresh.

Starting in early 2007, I will be teaching cooking and beginning sewing classes in my home. Watch my calendar for dates or call me at 608-240-9773 for details.

Easy Cheese Grater Cleaning tip

Next time you are ready to grate cheese, first spray the grater with vegetable oil and the cheese will not stick to it as readily as if not sprayed. Easy clean up with a pre-treatment of oil. The same is true of measuring cups when measuring peanut butter and honey or sticky foods.

Knitter's tips

Cylinders that potato chips come in are handy for knitting projects – just wash and dry the empty can, place a skein of yarn in it, cut a hole in the plastic top and pull the end of the yarn through the hole.

You can cover the outside of the can with contact paper, if you like to make it pretty. It's especially convenient for taking your knitting with you when traveling.

Polishing silver

Wash the tarnished items, then place on aluminum foil in the bottom of a pot (kettle). Combine 1/4 cup baking soda, 3 teaspoons salt (table salt is fine) and 1 quart of boiling water. Pour over tarnished items in the kettle and turn items if necessary to clean all surfaces. As soon as the tarnish is gone, remove and rinse thoroughly and dry with a soft, clean cloth.

I found this to be the best method I have ever used. This solution removed tarnish that sliver cleaner did not remove and it was done in seconds with not mess like a tooth brush and sliver cleaner produces. I used it on silver chamber stick bases and on jewelry and they looked like new when I was done.
