Testing the Temperature of Outdoor Grills

Check the temperature of your grill by cautiously holding the palm of your hand near the grate at the cooking level. Count the number of seconds that you can hold your hand in that position befoe the heat forces you to pull it away. About 4 seconds is recommended for medium heat.

Garden Calendar

Use an extra calendar or an old calendar to remind yourself when to do various garden chores. Each time you come by new planting or care instructions, write the infomation under the appropriate dates. For example, put “prune grapes” on Feb. 22, “repot and fertilize poinsettia” on May 1 and “plant spring bulbs” on Oct. 15. It doesn't matter what year the calendar is. This just lets you know what time of year each job should be done. After several years of adding information, your calendar is fairly complete, and you can tell at a glance which chores need to be done each month.

Curtains -Bridal Veils – Cabbage Plants – Lettuce

Don't throw old sheer curtains away. (If you don't have any and want to protect your plants, check charitable stores like Goodwill, Bethesda, St. Vincents, etc.) They are perfect for covering cabbage plants to keep destructive moths from laying eggs there. It is also a good cover for lettuce in hot weather.

Long bridal veils can also be used for this.

Chili Corn in Husks

Trim ends off of eight large ears of unhusked corn. Remove about half of the husks. Push the remaining husks aside and remove corn silk. Replace husks and tie into place. Put ears on a rack in a large covered kettle. Add 2 cups water, cover and steam for 20 minutes or until corn is tender. Remove husks. Heat 1/2 cup butter and 2-3 teaspoons of chili powder; brush on corn just before serving.

Soup Stock Substitutions

STOCK SUBSTITUTIONS

If you are in a hurry and do not have time to make your own stock, excellent commercial substitutes are available. And, if you don't have the specified flavor, substitute a different one – you may even prefer it!

Canned beef and chicken broths are ready to use straight from the can. Canned condensed beef and chicken broths are also available. These must be diluted according to can directions.

Instant bouillon granules and cubes can be purchased in beef, chicken, vegetable and onion flavors. These should be mixed with water according to package directions before using as a broth substitute.

Keep Fresh Garnish on Your Serving Plates

When using kale, lettuce, cut fruit or cut vegetables, wash or rinse them, and while still damp, spray them with a spray vegetable oil, like Pam, etc. before placing them on your serving tray/plate.  The oil will not only make them more vibrant in color (greens adn purples are brighter, especially with kale), they will also stay fresh for the entire day or serving time.  The oil will help give them a shiny, fresh look and will seal in the moisture to keep them from wilting.  If any one would take them off the tray to eat, it is not harmful or distasteful.
